How Do I Prepare My Lawn for Summer?

man seeding and fertilizing lawn

As the days grow longer and the sun shines brighter, it’s time to prepare your lawn for the summer ahead. A little preparation now can go a long way in ensuring your yard stays lush and healthy throughout the season. Here are some essential lawncare tips to get your yard summer-ready.

Aerate Your Lawn

Aerating your lawn is crucial as it allows water, oxygen, and nutrients to reach the grass roots more effectively. This promotes a healthy root system, which is essential for a lush lawn. For cool-season grasses, aerate in the fall, and for warm-season grasses, aerate in the spring.

Remove Excess Thatch

Thatch is a layer of decaying plant material that can block sunlight and prevent water from reaching the roots. Rake up excess thatch in the spring to ensure your lawn is ready for summer.

Fertilize Your Grass

Believe it or not, fertilization is an element of lawncare that many overlook. Different grass types have different fertilization needs. For warm-season grasses, apply a nitrogen-rich fertilizer in early spring and again in late summer. For cool-season grasses, fertilize in early spring and early fall, with a higher nitrogen concentration in the fall.

Water Your Lawn

Proper watering is essential for a healthy lawn. Most grasses require about one inch of irrigation per week during peak growing seasons. Water deeply and infrequently to encourage deep root growth.

Keep Your Grass Mowed

Mow your lawn regularly, but never remove more than one-third of the grass height in a single mowing. This helps maintain a healthy root system and promotes strong, vibrant growth.

Reseed Bare Patches

Before your grass’s peak growing season, reseed any bare patches in your lawn. Till the soil, spread the seed evenly, and water regularly.

Seasonal Lawncare’s Comprehensive Program

Seasonal Lawncare’s comprehensive program consists of five applications, each including a carefully balanced liquid fertilizer, targeted weed control, and pre-emergent crabgrass management. The applications are as follows:

  • Early Spring: Our first visit occurs as soon as the weather warms up. During this visit, we apply pre-emergent crabgrass and broadleaf control, along with a balanced fertilizer to revive your grass from dormancy.

  • Spring: As spring progresses, we make another trip to address weed control and apply additional fertilizer to maintain the thickness and strength of your grass. This visit also includes a thorough check for grubs or other lawn-damaging pests.

  • Early Summer: With the arrival of summer, we apply another round of balanced fertilizer to nourish your grass and prepare it for the warmer months. Targeted spot spraying for weeds and grub applications, if needed, are also part of this visit.

  • Late Summer: As summer progresses, we adjust the fertilizer to sustain your grass through the final weeks of the season and ready it for fall. Additional targeted weed treatments and pest inspections are conducted to ensure your lawn remains healthy.

  • Early Fall: During our final visit of the season, we spray for weeds one last time and apply a specialized fertilizer aimed at promoting root growth. This final application helps your grass maintain its green color into the colder months.

This comprehensive seasonal approach to lawn care ensures that your grass receives the necessary treatments and nutrients at the right times, keeping it healthy and vibrant throughout the year.
